Según la enciclopedia Británica Cottage,  hace referencia a  viviendas de una sola planta, a veces con los dormitorios en el tejado, a modo de techo falso o cama nido hecha de materiales baratos o reciclados (adobe, escombros, paja.) Construcciones propias tanto de la costa este de Irlanda como de la costa oeste de Inglaterra.
